Remove metadata from a PDF: clean hidden data before sharing
Published 2026-09-09 · Tutorial
Every PDF you create quietly records details about you: the author name from your account, the software that made the file, the date it was created and often a trail of when and how it was edited. You cannot see this metadata on the page, but anyone with a PDF reader can almost always inspect it. Before you send a sensitive document, here is how to clean that hidden data out of your PDF so only the visible content travels.
What is hiding in a PDF
Metadata is the invisible information stored alongside the pages. It typically includes the title and author, which may be pulled from your computer account, the producer and creator software, and timestamps for creation and modification. Some files also keep a hidden editing history or GPS and camera data carried in from photos. To see yours, most readers have a Document Properties or File Info menu, which is where this data becomes visible and where it leaks to anyone you share the file with.
Why you should care before sharing
That hidden data matters because it is information you did not choose to reveal. Your legal name as the document author, the exact office software on your machine, or a creation date that contradicts a story you are telling is exactly the kind of detail a sharp recipient notices. For contracts, medical records, legal filings and anything confidential, cleaning metadata is part of preparing the document, alongside removing sensitive content with redaction.
The simplest cleaning method
The surest way to drop the metadata is to make a fresh copy of the file that keeps only the visible pages. Export the document to images with convert a PDF to images, then reassemble those pages into a new file with Images to PDF. The rebuilt PDF contains the pages you see and almost none of the hidden metadata, because it was created fresh with your own settings as the source, the same tactic you would use to flatten a signed file until it is permanent.
For text documents, rebuild from the text
If your document is mostly text, you can bypass the original file entirely. Use PDF to Text to pull out the content, review it, then build a brand-new clean document with Text to PDF. This is the strongest guarantee of privacy: the new file is born from your text with no trace of the original author or software. You lose the fixed design, but for letters and simple documents that is a fair trade for a fully clean file.
Check it yourself before you send
After cleaning, inspect the result the same way a recipient would: open Document Properties and confirm the author field is empty or generic, no creation time contradicts the visible content, and no hidden layers remain. Only then is the file ready to travel. If the document also carries confidential figures, add a password to the PDF so the clean copy you send stays the only version in circulation.
Clean metadata is part of good hygiene
Removing metadata takes a minute and protects details you would never print on the page. It pairs naturally with the rest of your document hygiene: compressing the file to a sensible size, rotating any sideways pages and reviewing the layout before sending. The result is a document that shows exactly what you want it to show, nothing more.
