Convert a PDF to Images: Export Pages as JPG or PNG

Published 2026-09-02 · Tutorial

Sometimes you do not need a PDF at all: you need its pages as pictures. A slide for a presentation, an image for your website, a page to post on social media or to paste into a document. Converting a PDF to images is the fastest way to get there, and with the right tool it stays free, private and fast.

When you need a PDF as images

A PDF is perfect for reading and sharing a complete document, but it is awkward when you want to reuse a single page somewhere else. Turning pages into JPG or PNG gives you files that paste into slides, design tools, emails and galleries. It is the standard route for previewing a contract, publishing a report page or building a visual excerpt from a longer file.

Choose between JPG and PNG

The format matters. JPG compresses harder and produces smaller files, which is great for photos and scans where tiny details do not matter. PNG keeps every pixel lossless, so it is the right choice for text, diagrams, logos and anything with sharp edges you want to remain crisp. When in doubt, start with PNG for readability and switch to JPG if the file gets too big.

Pick the right sharpness

The export sharpness controls the balance between quality and weight. A low setting is fine for a quick preview or a web thumbnail, while a higher sharpness keeps small text legible and is safer when you plan to print the image or zoom into it. The convert a PDF to images tool lets you dial this from about 72 to 216 dpi, so you can match the output to how the image will actually be used.

Export one page or the whole document

You do not have to export everything at once. When you only need a single page, extracting just that one keeps the workflow quick and avoids downloading a big pile of files. For a full report, exporting every page lets you turn the whole PDF into an image series, one picture per page, ready to embed or archive. The image of a single page also makes a clean thumbnail for a project folder.

Use the images in slides, web pages and posts

Once exported, the images drop straight into wherever you work. A full-page PNG sits cleanly in a slide deck, a sharp JPG uploads fast as a web image, and a single page converts effortlessly into a social post. Because the export is local, the document never leaves your device, so you can convert confidential pages without worrying about uploading them anywhere. If you later need the text instead, try extracting text from the PDF or turning the PDF back into editable text.

Keep the original as your source of truth

Treat the exported images as a copy, not a replacement. Keep the original PDF somewhere safe so you can convert again at a different sharpness, merge it later with other files using Merge PDF or convert it back to a document. Images are great for sharing a look at the content, but the PDF stays the reference you can always return to. That way you get the convenience of pictures without ever losing the master file.
