How to sign a PDF on your phone

Published 2026-09-14 · Tutorial

It used to be that signing a document meant printing it, signing with a pen and scanning it back. That is no longer necessary: you can sign a PDF directly on your phone in a couple of minutes, whether you type your name, draw it with your finger, or use a photo of your signature. Here is how to do it quickly and keep the signature looking right on every device.

The three ways to sign on a phone

On a phone you have three practical options. You can type your name in a script font, which is fast and looks neat. You can draw your signature with your finger on the touchscreen, which looks closest to your real handwriting. Or you can use a photo of an ink signature you already have. All three are valid; the right choice depends on whether the document needs your actual handwriting or simply your approval mark.

How a typed signature works

A typed signature is simply your name entered as text and placed on the page the way a signature field expects. It is the quickest option, useful for routine approvals where a distinct handwritten mark is not essential. Most signing workflows let you insert your name in a font that resembles cursive, then position and resize it. Even this simple signature becomes legally meaningful when paired with the intent to sign, the same way a drawn or inked one is.

Draw or paste your real signature

For documents where your signature should look like yours, drawing with your finger or inserting a photo of your ink signature is better. If you have a clean picture of your signature on a white background, you can crop and scale it onto the page. The images to PDF route is handy for preparing a signature image or a full signed page. A visible signature that resembles your handwriting reads as more personal and is harder to dispute.

Place the signature on the page

Where the signature goes matters. Sign on the line after your printed name or directly in the signature field designed by the document sender. Keep your signature inside the visible page area so nothing is clipped when the file prints. If the document has multiple signature lines, take your time and place each one before you save, because once the file is flattened the marks are permanent and you cannot simply swipe them away.

Keep the signature permanent when you send

A signature drawn on top of a page can sometimes disappear if the recipient's viewer does not render that layer. To stop that, the signature needs to become part of the page itself, a step known as flattening, covered in the guide to keeping a signature permanent. If you want to control what happens to the signed file afterwards, password-protect the PDF so printing and editing are restricted to the approved version.

Signing options to know about

For most documents a typed or drawn signature on your phone is perfectly acceptable. If you are interested in the stronger, verifiable kind, the difference between an electronic and a digital signature is worth understanding, because digital signatures add proof the file was not altered. Whether you keep it simple or go further, signing from your phone removes the printer, the scanner and the delay, and lets you close a deal from wherever you are.
