Remove blank pages from a PDF in seconds

Published 2026-09-28 · Tutorial

Blank pages sneak into PDFs all the time. They appear after a scan that picked up an empty sheet, at the end of a print run, or in the middle of a file because a document export left a filler page. They are harmless until you send the file and the recipient scrolls through dead space, wastes paper printing it, or counts pages and thinks a section is missing. Removing a blank page is a quick fix once you can see which page is empty and cut it out without touching the rest. Here is how to remove blank pages from a PDF, step by step.

First, find exactly which pages are blank

Before you delete anything, work out which pages are truly empty. A page can look blank to the eye yet still carry an invisible object, a stray white box, a page number or an invisible image, which is why some tools refuse to drop it. Open the file and scroll through it; a genuinely empty page usually shows nothing in the preview at all. If you are unsure, look at the thumbnail list in your viewer, where the blank sheet stands out as a bare grey tile among pages with content. That list is also where you will click to select what to remove.

Use the page removal tool, not a hand edit

The cleanest way is a dedicated page tool. On the PDF splitter and page tools you can view the pages as thumbnails, click the ones you want to delete and keep the rest in a single pass. This is safer than trying to delete a page with an image editor or a text app, which can flatten the layout or drop content you did not mean to touch. Working from thumbnails removes only what you select, exactly, and returns a PDF that keeps its text, links and quality.

Deal with a blank page in the middle of the file

A dead sheet in the middle is a nuisance because it breaks the sequence, and a report with page 4 blank between pages 3 and 5 reads as a document problem, not a formatting one. In the thumbnail view, click the blank page so it is highlighted, then delete just that one page. If the file has several empty sheets scattered through it, select all of them at once and remove them together: the tool reassembles the remaining pages in order, so your numbered sections stay where they belong.

When the blank page carries an invisible object

If a page shows nothing but refuses to be removed as blank, it usually contains an invisible element such as a white rectangle or a hidden text frame. In that case select the page anyway and delete it by its number rather than waiting for a detect-blank filter. The page removal tool lets you type the range or tick the page directly, which is the reliable way to drop a stubborn page. After removal, visually check the neighbours to confirm nothing shifted across.

Check the result and reorder if needed

Once the blank sheets are gone, review the whole file before sending it. Confirm the page count is what you expect, verify every section still starts on the right page, and make sure no real content was caught by accident. If removing a page exposed a gap or you want a different order, you can reorder pages and move sections around with the same thumbnail view. This is also the moment to rotate a page if a scan came out sideways next to the ones you kept.

Keep the edited file tidy

After cutting the blanks, give the file a quick pass before you distribute it. Rebuild the file so there is no leftover page object, then compress the PDF if it grew during the cleanup, and add page numbers so the final document counts cleanly from the first page. For anything you are about to share, a quick protect PDF (password) step keeps the finished version as the one that travels. In a few minutes a messy file becomes a professional one.
