Remove a PDF password: unlock your own documents
Published 2026-08-21 · Tutorial
You set a password on a PDF a while ago and now want to share it freely, or a client sent you the password and expects an opened file. Here is how to remove the protection from a document you legitimately own.

Clear permissions, keep control
Opening a PDF that protects itself with a password means entering it each time you share. Removing the password makes the file comfortable to use again: edit, copy and print without friction.
The step-by-step
Use a PDF unlocker such as Unlock PDF, drop the file, enter the password you own, then download the opened version. It is identical in content, just without the restriction.
Keep the copy safe
An unlocked PDF is open to anyone who receives it. If the document is still sensitive, think about re-protecting it with Protect PDF before you forward it, or only strip the password on a copy you control.
Why do it legitimately
Removing a password is meant for documents you created or that were shared with you and meant to be re-usable. It is not a way around someone else's security for a file you do not have rights to.
